21 April 2023 – Covid Recommendations Update

Following the most recent announcement by the HSE on 31st March 2023 regarding the use of PPE in a clinical setting, the Irish Reflexologists’ Institute would like to update its members on the current recommendations/guidelines for the use of PPE in their reflexology practice.

With effect from 31st March 2023 it is no longer a requirement for Reflexologists to wear a face mask for all interactions with their clients, although some may continue to choose to do so. The wearing of a facemask is now completely at the reflexologist’s own discretion.

Although reflexology would be considered a low risk setting the IRI still recommends its members to continue to risk assess. It continues to be in the reflexologist’s own interest to implement standard precautions for infection prevention and control to minimise the risk of infection to both the reflexologist and their families. This would include maintaining a high level of clinical hygiene, and displaying posters on hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette.

Covid Restrictions Update 28 February 2022:

The National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended that the requirement to wear mask in most areas where currently regulated should end by February 28th. However, mask wearing will still be required in healthcare settings, for further updates go to http://www.gov.ie

Covid Restrictions Update 27 January 2022:

We are delighted to hear of the recent lifting of COVID-19 restrictions by our government. While there is a level of normality returning, and as the high rates of daily cases of covid still exist especially as it is still flu season, it is important that our members keep applying professional high standards around Covid Prevention within the clinical practice setting.

Following the recent Government announcement re Covid-19 and the latest updates dated today, 26th January 2022 on the removal of most of the public health measures currently in place the Irish Reflexologists Institute make the following recommendations to their members.

  • Appointment procedures and Pre-treatment screening is at the members discretion, but it is advised that members establish that clients have no symptoms before treatment
  • Communications with clients is at the members discretion
  • All cleaning & sanitising procedures should remain a priority
  • Maintain the current standard of handwashing and sanitising.
  • Keep applying high standards of hygiene and cleaning between clients especially to all touch surfaces and bedding.
  • Mask wearing will still be required in clinical settings, for both therapist and client, except for those who already have exemptions on medical grounds
  • As Covid testing is still in place it is recommended to ask our clients to reschedule their appointment if they have
    • a positive antigen test,
    • have been a close contact
    • are displaying symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Requirements for physical distancing (2m) are no longer necessary
  • Requirements for Contact Tracing are no longer necessary
  • Continue to risk assess on an individual basis particularly for those most vulnerable
  • Review and update Covid-19 posters as necessary

The IRI recommend that each member update their individual Risk Assessment and continue to take any precautions necessary to protect their business, clients, family members and themselves and reduce any risk of exposure to or transmission of Covid-19

It should be noted that the Government have also reiterated that the Covid-19 pandemic is not over and the emergence of new variants with increased levels of transmissibility remains a risk.

As the Government continue to review their recommendations the IRI ask its members to continue to refer to www.gov.ie / www.hse.ie  for any changes or updates on their recommendations.
